A smart tower costs close to a thousand dollars before the first leaf. A DIY 4-foot system costs a few hundred. Which one actually gives you cheaper lettuce?

Defaults (change them to yours): Gardyn Home 4 $949 list price (Gardyn's site has also shown $899 and promo codes); membership $39/month, $34/month on a 1-year plan or $29/month on a 2-year plan, includes 10 plant credits a month, and is optional (Gardyn, checked 30 Oct 2026). Non-member plants from $4.99 each. Gardyn light wattage is an estimate from third-party specs. DIY cost, wattage, nutrients, harvest and store prices are examples only. Electricity: check your bill (EIA publishes state averages). "Heads per month" means the lettuce or lettuce-equivalent greens you actually harvest; the cost per head assumes everything you grow is counted as lettuce.
What you're really paying for
With a smart tower you pay for convenience: lights, pump, sensors, an app that schedules everything and pre-seeded pods delivered to the door. The trade-off is a high upfront price and, if you want the AI coaching and plant credits, an ongoing membership (Gardyn says it is optional; without it the system still grows plants and you buy pods individually). A DIY build swaps money for an afternoon of work: a reservoir, a small pump or air pump, net cups, growing medium, nutrients, an LED shop light and seeds. You also give up the warranty and the app.
Either way, hydroponics takes regular care: topping up and changing water, checking pH and nutrient strength, and cleaning the system so roots stay healthy. Keep any electrical gear and outlets clear of water, use a GFCI-protected outlet near the reservoir, and follow the nutrient maker's label.
Which one should you pick?
Pick a smart tower if you want it to work out of the box, have little time, or want a showpiece in the kitchen. Build DIY if you want the lowest cost per head, enjoy tinkering, or want to grow bigger plants and your own seed varieties. Run your own numbers above: the membership is usually the biggest long-term cost.

How much does a Gardyn cost?
On 30 Oct 2026 Gardyn's official site listed the Home 4 at $949 (it has also shown $899 and runs promo codes). The optional membership is $39 a month, $34 a month on a 1-year plan or $29 a month on a 2-year plan.
Do you need a Gardyn membership?
No. Gardyn says the membership is not required; non-members can buy plants individually from $4.99. Members get 10 plant credits a month, discounts and the Kelby AI features.
Is DIY hydroponics cheaper than Gardyn?
Usually, per head of lettuce, because the upfront cost is lower and there is no membership. You trade that for build time, more hands-on care and no warranty. Use the calculator with your own prices.
Is AeroGarden still in business?
Yes. After announcing a shutdown in late 2024, AeroGarden relaunched in 2025 under ScottsMiracle-Gro, which says gardens, seed pods and accessories are available.
How much electricity does a hydroponic garden use?
Mostly the grow light: watts x hours per day x 30 / 1000 gives kWh per month. An 80 W light run 16 hours a day uses about 38 kWh a month, about $7 at 18 cents per kWh.
